Danish High School System

Overview of the Danish High School System

After 9 or 10 years of primary and lower secondary school (Folkeskole), students in Denmark can choose from several upper secondary (youth) education programs. These are typically three years long, and they prepare students for university or employment.

There are three main tracks:

  1. General Upper Secondary Education (preparing for university)

  2. Vocational Education and Training (VET) (preparing for skilled professions)

  3. EUX (A combination of the two)

Let’s explore the most common general high school types:

STX – General Upper Secondary School

  • Focus: Broad academic education in humanities, sciences, and social studies.

  • Ideal for: Students aiming for university and unsure of their future field.

  • Language of instruction: Usually Danish, but some schools offer International STX programs in English.

  • Subjects: Danish, English, a second foreign language, mathematics, history, biology, etc.

Tip for international families: If your child speaks fluent Danish or is ready to learn quickly, STX offers flexibility and university access in Denmark and abroad.

HHX– Higher Commercial Examination Programme

  • Focus: Business, economics, marketing, and international trade.

  • Ideal for: Entrepreneurial students or those interested in commerce and finance.

  • Language of instruction: Mostly Danish, though some courses may be available in English.

  • Subjects: International economics, business economics, marketing, math, and languages.

Why choose HHX? It combines academic rigor with business skills and is perfect for students eyeing business school or global careers.

HTX – Higher Technical Examination Programme

  • Focus: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).

  • Ideal for: Students interested in technology, IT, or natural sciences.

  • Language of instruction: Primarily Danish.

  • Subjects: Technology, design, physics, chemistry, IT, innovation.

Good to know: HTX highly aligns well with tech or engineering university programs.

IB – International Baccalaureate

  • Focus: An international curriculum recognized worldwide.

  • Ideal for: Globally mobile families or students who want instruction in English.

  • Language of instruction: English.

  • Subjects: Same as global IB – including Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay.

Why IB in Denmark? Denmark hosts several IB World Schools, often located in major cities (Copenhagen, Aarhus, etc.). It’s a strong choice if your family may relocate again.

HF Exam

  • Focus: is a 2-year upper secondary education that is especially aimed at those who want to continue their studies on a professional bachelor's or business academy education.

  • Ideal for: The program can be finished in two years, rather than three for students who want an accelerated course as this program is traditionally aimed at older students and people who already have a different education such as a technical one.

  • Language of Instruction: Danish but International HF is available at the Aarhus Gymnasium in Tilst.

  • Subjects: Humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and languages. Students typically choose subjects based on their interests and future academic or career aspirations.

Why HF exam in Denmark? Several HF courses offer special training courses for young people in need of special support, e.g. due to a diagnosis or mental health challenges. In these courses, the teaching is organized with special needs in mind.

What to Expect as an International Family?

  • Language: Most high school programs are in Danish, but support is often available. Some schools offer “preparatory” Danish language classes.

  • Admission: Placement may depend on grades, Danish language proficiency, and interviews.

  • Support: Schools often provide counselling and integration help for international students.

  • Costs: Public upper secondary education is free for residents, including EU/EEA citizens and families with a residence permit.

Choosing the Right Path

When selecting a school, consider:

  • Your child’s personality, strengths and interests

  • Long-term university or career plans

  • Language proficiency

  • Location and transportation

Final Thoughts

Denmark’s high school system offers rich, diverse pathways that balance theory and practical experience. Whether your child is a budding engineer, economist, artist, or academic explorer, there’s a program that fits. While the transition may come with a learning curve-especially in language-many international students thrive here with the right guidance and mindset.

Something to note: as of 2025, the system is up for debate in Danish Parliament.
